About AVIF and JPG

AVIF is the newest of the four, built on the AV1 codec. It usually produces the smallest files and handles transparency and wide color, though browsers can only read it for now, so it is an input format here.

JPG is the long-standing lossy photo format. It compresses smooth gradients and photographic detail well, but it has no transparency and shows artifacts around sharp edges at lower quality settings.

Converting AVIF to JPG is lossy — the quality slider trades file size against fidelity. The image is decoded, drawn to a canvas and re-encoded by the browser, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.
