About AVIF and WebP

AVIF is the newest of the four, built on the AV1 codec. It usually produces the smallest files and handles transparency and wide color, though browsers can only read it for now, so it is an input format here.

WebP typically lands 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality, supports transparency and animation, and every current browser reads it — which makes it a safe default for the web.

Converting AVIF to WebP is lossy — the quality slider trades file size against fidelity. The image is decoded, drawn to a canvas and re-encoded by the browser, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.
